This Meme Makes me Unhappy

I recently watched the movie Rain Man for the first time and I wrote a couple of pieces about it elsewhere:

I got extremely upset and noped out of it for thirty minutes or more when Raymond -- the adult with autism played by Dustin Hoffman -- walks in on his much younger brother Charlie having sex, sits down and begins watching TV next to the couple.

Charlie yells at Raymond to get out and at no point does the movie really strongly assert that Charlie is very much in the wrong because he didn't bother to close the door, much less lock it, and then he's yelling at a guy who has been institutionalized for decades.

His girlfriend walks out but later gets back together with him. It's a very mild rebuke, not a strong statement. And also she could have insisted they close and lock the door because they aren't alone in this hotel suite.

This is a SHOCKINGLY common theme in movies and TV shows and is typically presented as humorous.

I watched The Door in the Floor on a rented CD and rewatched at least part of it with the director's commentary turned on. There is a scene where the three or four year old daughter walks in on her mother having sex with a much younger illicit lover.

The child begins screaming and the mother tells her to stop screaming and the director said that was done -- the part about mom telling her to stop screaming -- so audiences would know it's okay to laugh about the scene.

Yeah, I don't think it's funny.

The Golden Girls had a scene where they are discussing walking in on parents having sex. Rose -- played by Betty White and presented as kind of an overly naive idiot -- says something like that never happened to her, though she did walk in on her parents playing naked leap frog once.

If you are a parent, shut and lock the door. There's nothing funny about this and there's nothing inevitable about it.

This kind of garbage is why we have the concept of Rape Culture. This is apparently a very common experience for children and we put it in movies and TV shows and tell people "It's okay to laugh about it."

I never once walked in on my parents and my children never once walked in on me. This is ENTIRELY within your control as a parent to arrange for privacy and make sure there's no opportunity for this to happen.
